ABOUT US
Friends Of The Old Golf Course is a group of residents who want to protect the beautiful natural park that once was the Clear Lake City Golf course from environmental destruction. See History. Our goal is to protect this lovely area by offering a unique planning design that provides a much needed park environment while protecting 90 percent of the many 50 year old oaks, pine, other hardwood trees and the wildlife that live there. Information about our plan can be found by clicking on Our Plan. |
In the spring of 2012, a door flyer announced a town hall meeting to discuss the reuse of the Clear Lake Old Golf Course. This door flyer only went to homes on the old golf course. At the meeting, we were informed that the Clear Lake Water Authority, through an appointed committee, decided to gut the old golf course, destroy all the trees and ruin our green space. The committee even used the name "Greenplan" even though all green would be scraped away. When we objected to the plan, we were ignored by their moderator. That night, we were given an "opportunity" to participate in the final plan by joining one of their pre-set subcommittees. Each subcommittee was co-chaired (controlled) by one of the Greenplan people. We hoped that through these subcommittees, we could save our park. But that was not allowed. People who objected were vilified by the Greenplan committee and their associates. Despite our efforts, the Water Authority turned a deaf ear to the residents and voted to destroy the old golf course and turn it into a muddy swamp. The Greenplan committee was just a sham to give the appearance that residents blessed this plan. But we did not. We trusted our Water Authority and believed that they would value our community input. We were wrong.
Realizing that we were ignored and manipulated, we formed stopthebulldozers and publicly objected to the plan. Meanwhile, another group also felt that our park, ponds and incredible bird population needed protection. They formed savetheogc. Both groups joined together in the spring of 2013 to create Friends of the Old Golf Course. Our efforts continue today.
The Water Authority has stated repeatedly that they will destroy our park, but will not rebuild it. We will be left with an ugly hole gutting the center of town and scarring our city for decades. Please help us stop the CLCWA's horrible plan. Help us save these beautiful trees and our beautiful park (see the Photo Gallery). Trees need us. Birds need us. Please stand up and protect them and our community. Join us.
